Horns

Jeffrey Lang
Associate Principal Hornist
Philadelphia Orchestra

Jeffrey Lang performs and teaches French horn in the greater New York - Philadelphia area. He is currently Associate Principal horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Principal horn of the American Symphony Orchestra. Formerly Principal horn of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeff has been invited as guest Principal horn of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the New York City Opera Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. Jeff is currently on the faculty of Temple University and Bard College. He studied at the Juilliard School and Temple University, and has recently given masterclasses in Israel, Finland, Korea and the USA. Jeff is a frequent soloist and has appeared with Zubin Mehta, Mung-Whun Chung, Kurt Masur, Leon Botstein and Rossen Milanov conducting. Chamber music performances at home and abroad have included concerts with Bella Davidovitch, Diane Walsh, Simone Dinnerstein, The Israel Piano Trio, the Wister Quartet, Rolf Schulte, Melvin Chen, Richard Wilson, the Canadian Brass, and members of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He has participated in the Kingston Chamber Music Festival, Bard Summerscape, OK Mozart and the Spoleto Festival. Jeff records for several TV, film, and commercial artists in the metropolitan area and was Principal horn of Disney's long running Broadway hit, Beauty and the Beast. He is an active member of the Recording Academy, the International Horn Society, and the American Federation of Musicians.

Darin Kelly
Trumpetist

Darin Kelly (trumpet) appears frequently with The Philadelphia Orchestra and other performing ensembles throughout the mid-Atlantic region. He is a member of the IRIS Orchestra, the renowned chamber orchestra based near Memphis, TN. His collaborative recording with soprano Julianne Baird, Soprano Arias with Trumpet and Organ, has been hailed by critics worldwide as “… seamless playing that is equally light and virtuosic.” In addition, he is in wide demand as an arranger and orchestrator; his work has been performed by many major symphonies and ensembles across the country, including the Detroit, St. Louis, Grand Rapids, Virginia, and Jacksonville Symphonies.  He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Armando Ghitalla, and currently holds teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. He maintains an active interest in Traditional Irish music and 30's-era traditional Jazz, and has recorded for the Albany, Naxos, Ondine, and Deutsche Gramophon labels.

Matthew Vaughn
Associate Principal Trombonist
Philadelphia Orchestra

Matthew Vaughn, former Principal Trombone of the San Anotnio Symphony, has been the Associate Principal Trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999. A former member of the United States Air Force Concert Band, Mr. Vaughn has performed with the National Symphony, Israeli Philharmonic, and the ”Super-World” Orchestra in Tokyo, Japan.  An active soloist, Mr. Vaughn has performed with the San Antonio Symphony, Lafayette Symphony, Richmond (Indiana) Symphony, Mainline Symphony, the United States Air Force Band, the University of Kentucky Symphony, and the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.  He has given frequent solo recitals and masterclasses in the Philadelphia area and worldwide and has performed on stage with many of the world's most prestigious conductors and soloists. Mr. Vaughn earned a Bachelor of Music degree with high distinction and a Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University in 1992, continuing with graduate work in education and conducting at Indiana University and George Mason University. An accomplished music educator, Mr. Vaughn teaches trombone and coaches brass chamber music at Temple University, and is the founder of the Bar Harbor Brass Week. Mr. Vaughn, a former winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop Solo Competition, studied with David Brumfield, M. Dee Stewart, and the late Dr. Milton Stevens.

South Street Brass Quintet

Scott Devereaux has appeared with such ensembles as The Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestra of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received an Artist Diploma in 2010.  He is currently a member of the Philos Brass Ensemble as well as Philadelphia's own, South Street Brass Quintet.  While at Curtis, he studied with current and former Philadelphia Orchestra members including Carol Jantsch, Paul Krzywicki, and Blair Bollinger.
 
Prior to entering Curtis, Mr. Devereaux earned a Bachelor of Music in tuba performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Fritz Kaenzig. He has also studied with Wesley Jacobs, principal tuba of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Devereaux has performed as a soloist with the Ann Arbor Concert Band and Arbor Brass Choir. He has also been a member of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony, Pine Mountain Music Festival Symphony and Opera Orchestra, and the National Orchestral Institute Orchestra at the University of Maryland. Mr. Devereaux was a finalist in the University of Michigan Concerto Competition and won the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Competition (2006) and the Bohemians Club Concerto Competition (2008).
