Youth Symphony Orchestras

Children's Orchestra Society is recruiting members from age 5-18 for its 4 orchestras. - The Children's Orchestra Society, founded in 1962 by Dr. H. T. Ma, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to “teaching children the language of music”, and to presenting these young musicians in orchestra and chamber music concerts with their peers and well-established artists. Under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Yeou-Cheng Ma and Music Director Michael Dadap, COS has, since 1984, held a firm belief in a child's innate capability to learn and develop musical talent of the highest level when nurtured in a supportive environment. With this vision, enormous support of its board members, and the hard work of its talented faculty and staff, COS has grown from an 18-member ensemble to more than 200 members comprising of four orchestras, a chamber music department, musicianship classes, and private lessons in piano, guitar and all orchestral instruments. Its most advanced orchestra, the Young Symphonic Ensemble, has presented annual concerts at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and, in more recent years, Carnegie Hall since the establishment of the Discovery Concert Series in 1994. It has also toured numerous North American cities as well as the Far East and the United Kingdom. DC Youth Orchestra Program:  www.dcyop.org  202-698-0123
Serving nearly 800 students annually, DC Youth Orchestra Program is the largest youth orchestra program in the DC Metro region.  Unique in the world of youth orchestras, DCYOP provides music education in small class settings and large ensemble training for all students regardless of their age, socioeconomic status, or ability to play their instrument.  Because of the unique structure and 12-level curriculum of the program, the DCYOP not only starts beginners, but focuses on education throughout the levels of the program.  The most advanced of 10 major ensembles, called the Youth Orchestra, has performed for every presidential administration since 1960.  The program's success has been recognized by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2002, the program received one of the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ 11 coveted “Coming Up Taller” Awards for out-of-school arts and humanities programs. The U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have also cited the DCYOP for its efforts.  In 2009 the students of the Youth Orchestra of the DC Youth Orchestra Program performed for the National Endowment for the Arts Council meeting and at the White House for the current administration’s first and second Easter Egg Roll.  Students also performed at a holiday event at the White house in December 2009 and at the State Department for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in November 2009.  The orchestra not only performs regularly at the highly acclaimed and gorgeous John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts but has also worked with some of the world’s greatest conductors including Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, Marvin Hamlisch, and Lorin Maazel.
